Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro has two rainy seasons: the long rains from about mid-March to May, and the short rains in November. Climbing is possible in both. The trails are quieter and the forest is at its greenest, but you need the right route and the right gear.

What to expect

SeasonWeather on the mountain
Long rains, mid-March–MayFrequent heavy rain on the lower slopes, mud in the forest, cloud for much of the day. April is usually the wettest month.
Short rains, NovemberShowers, often in the afternoon, with dry spells. Easier than the long rains.

Higher up, rain often turns to snow, and the summit can be cold and white. Above the clouds, mornings are often clear.

Advantages

  • Fewer climbers. Camps are quiet, even on popular routes.
  • Green landscapes and flowers in the heath and moorland zone.
  • Easier availability for flights and hotels.

Disadvantages

  • Slippery, muddy trails, especially in the rainforest.
  • Wet gear is harder to dry, and cold feels colder when you are damp.
  • Fewer views, and a slightly lower chance of reaching the summit.
  • Fewer group departures run.

The best routes in the rain

The northern side of Kilimanjaro is in a rain shadow and receives less rain than the south. The Rongai Route is the usual choice for the wet season. The Marangu Route is another option because you sleep in huts, which are easier to stay dry in than tents.

How to stay dry

  • A good waterproof jacket and trousers, and a pack cover.
  • Pack everything in dry bags inside your duffel.
  • Keep one set of dry clothes for camp and never walk in them.
  • Bring extra socks and gaiters.
  • Waterproof your boots before you travel.
