You do not need to be an athlete to climb Kilimanjaro, but good fitness makes every day easier and leaves you more energy for summit night. The aim is endurance: walking for several hours, several days in a row. Start about three months before your climb.
What to focus on
- Hiking with a loaded daypack, ideally on hills.
- Cardio such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or stair climbing.
- Leg and core strength for the long descents.
- Back-to-back days to get used to walking when you are already tired.
A 12-week plan
| Weeks | Weekday | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | 3 sessions of 30–45 minutes cardio, 2 short strength sessions | One hike of 2–3 hours with a light pack |
| 5–8 | 3 sessions of 45–60 minutes, including hills or stairs, 2 strength sessions | One hike of 4–5 hours with 5–6 kg |
| 9–11 | 3–4 sessions of 60 minutes, 2 strength sessions | Back-to-back hikes of 5–6 hours on Saturday and Sunday |
| 12 | Light walks only | Rest before you travel |
Strength exercises
Squats, lunges, step-ups and calf raises build the legs. Planks help with balance and carrying a pack. Two sessions of 20–30 minutes a week are enough.
Train with your gear
Wear your hiking boots on every training hike so they are fully broken in. Carry the daypack you will use on the mountain and test your layers in cold or wet weather. Our Kilimanjaro packing list has the full list.
What about altitude?
Fitness does not protect you from altitude sickness, so do not rely on it. If you can hike at altitude before the trip, it helps. Otherwise the most effective step is to choose a longer route. Read altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro.
If you have little time
Even six weeks of regular walking, stairs and one long weekend hike make a clear difference. Walk slowly on the mountain and choose seven days or more, such as Machame or Lemosho.
Frequently asked questions
Fit enough to walk six hours on hilly ground with a daypack, and to do it again the next day.
About three months before your climb. Six weeks still helps if you have less time.
No. Fitness makes the walking easier, but altitude affects fit and unfit people alike. Time on the mountain matters most.
