This nine-day private journey brings together the landscapes, wildlife and people that make northern Tanzania so remarkable, beginning beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, continuing through the baobab-dotted wilderness of Tarangire, into the volcanic highlands of Ngorongoro and across the endless plains of the Serengeti. It ends at Lake Eyasi, where time with local communities offers a very different perspective on Tanzania. You travel privately with your own 4×4 and a dedicated, experienced safari guide who speaks your language.
Your Tanzanian experience begins the moment you arrive. A Janel Safaris representative will welcome you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and accompany you on your private transfer to Moshi, in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Today is deliberately unhurried. Settle into your hotel and relax after your flight.
Later, your safari guide will meet you for a relaxed briefing, introducing you to the journey ahead and making sure everything is ready for your first day of exploration.
Today you experience the green foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro from a different perspective. Travel to Materuni and begin a guided walk through banana plantations, coffee farms and village paths. This is a chance to slow down and see the landscape as it is lived in: fertile, green and closely connected to the communities around it.
Continue on foot to Materuni Waterfall, where the forest opens around the cascading water. Take your time here for photographs, relaxation and, when conditions permit, a refreshing swim.
Later, meet local Chagga coffee producers and discover the traditional journey from coffee cherry to cup. You will see how the beans are prepared, roasted and ground before enjoying the coffee yourself.
Return to Moshi in the afternoon, with the remainder of the evening at leisure.
After breakfast, your private safari begins. Travel towards Tarangire National Park, where the landscape gradually changes to open grasslands, woodland and enormous ancient baobabs.
Once inside the park, your guide will shape the game drive around the wildlife activity and conditions of the day. Tarangire is particularly well known for its elephants, but the park offers much more: giraffes moving through the woodland, zebra and wildebeest across the plains, buffalo near water and a rich variety of birdlife.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park before continuing your exploration into the afternoon. As the light softens, leave the park and continue to your lodge, where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Enjoy a final morning in the Tarangire area before continuing towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The scenery changes dramatically as you leave the dry woodland behind and climb into the fertile highlands.
Along the way, you may see Maasai communities and traditional livestock herding, an opportunity to appreciate another important part of life in northern Tanzania.
Rather than filling the day with activities, the afternoon is intentionally slower. Arrive at your lodge on the Ngorongoro rim and take time to enjoy the spectacular highland setting. Tomorrow, you descend into the crater.
Rise early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater floor contains an extraordinary variety of landscapes, open grasslands, woodland, wetlands and lakes, creating a natural environment for a remarkable concentration of wildlife.
With your private guide, explore the crater in search of lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and, with luck, black rhino. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before beginning the ascent.
From Ngorongoro, continue towards the Serengeti. As the highlands fall away, the landscape begins to open. The horizon stretches further, the plains become wider and the feeling of wilderness becomes unmistakable. Your first Serengeti game viewing begins along the way.
Arrive at your camp in the evening and settle into the sounds of the African bush.
Today is dedicated entirely to the Serengeti. With a private vehicle, the day can begin according to what matters most to you. An early start lets you experience the plains in the cool morning light, when wildlife is often active. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxed breakfast before heading out.
Your guide will follow the wildlife rather than a fixed timetable. You may encounter lions resting after a night of activity, cheetahs scanning the open plains, elephants moving through woodland or large herds of wildebeest and zebra travelling across the landscape. Some moments will be exciting, others may be quiet, and both are part of safari.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your game drive through the afternoon. Return to camp as the day cools and enjoy an evening beneath the Serengeti sky.
A second full day gives you the chance to explore more of the Serengeti ecosystem. Your guide can take you into different areas of the park, depending on wildlife movements, the season and your interests.
Perhaps you want to spend more time following a pride of lions. Perhaps you want to photograph elephants in the morning light. Perhaps you simply want to stop somewhere beautiful, leave the engine quiet and watch the plains unfold around you.
Enjoy another picnic lunch in the wilderness before returning to camp later in the afternoon.
Enjoy a final morning in the Serengeti before beginning your journey towards Lake Eyasi. As you leave the plains behind, the landscape changes once again, taking you away from the classic safari circuit and towards the communities surrounding the lake.
Arrive at Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge and settle into its peaceful lakeside setting. The pace becomes slower here. There are no big game drives and no need to look constantly towards the horizon. Instead, this part of the journey prepares you for tomorrow's cultural experience, a chance to learn more about the people and traditions of this region.
Enjoy the evening and the changing colours of the landscape around the lake.
Your final day offers a different kind of experience. With a local guide, spend time learning about the Hadzabe community and their traditional relationship with the surrounding environment. Depending on the day's activities, you may learn about traditional hunting and gathering practices, local plants and foods, and skills that form part of their way of life.
You will also have an opportunity to learn about the Datoga community and traditional metalworking, gaining insight into another cultural tradition of the Lake Eyasi area. The emphasis is on respectful interaction and learning rather than simply observing from a distance.
After the experience, enjoy lunch before your private transfer towards Kilimanjaro International Airport, timed around your departure flight.
As the journey comes to an end, you leave Tanzania having experienced more than its famous wildlife. You have travelled through its landscapes, met some of its people and experienced different sides of the country.
