Travelling to Tanzania

Tanzania uses 230-volt electricity at 50 Hz. The most common sockets are Type G, the British-style three rectangular pins, and Type D, with three round pins. Bring a universal travel adapter that covers both.

Plug types

Type GThree rectangular pinsMost hotels and lodges
Type DThree large round pinsSome older buildings

Do you need a converter?

Phones, cameras and laptops usually accept 100–240V, so you only need an adapter. Check the label on your charger. Devices that run only on 110–120V, such as some hairdryers from North America, need a voltage converter.

Charging on safari

  • Lodges and hotels have sockets in rooms.
  • Tented camps often run on solar power or generators. Some have sockets in tents; others have a charging station in the main area. Power may be limited at night.
  • Safari vehicles usually have USB ports or an inverter for charging during game drives.

Charging on Kilimanjaro

There is no electricity on the mountain. Bring a power bank, and keep it and your phone warm in your sleeping bag at night, as cold drains batteries. A small solar panel can help on longer climbs.

Power cuts

Power cuts happen in towns. Most hotels have generators. Keep devices charged when you can.

What to pack

  • A universal adapter, ideally with USB ports
  • A power bank
  • Spare camera batteries
  • A multi-USB charger to charge several devices from one socket
