Elephants and baobabs,
and very few vehicles.
A river, a thousand ancient baobabs, and the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania. Most itineraries give it one night. It deserves two.
Three landscapes. One river.
Tarangire River
The only permanent water for miles in the dry season. Every animal in the ecosystem comes to it, which is why the northern loop is where you spend your mornings.
Silale Swamps
Green year-round and thick with elephant and buffalo. Fewer vehicles reach here — it is a two-hour drive from the gate.
Baobab country
Trees a thousand years old and eight metres across, many scarred by elephant tusks. The most photographable landscape on the northern circuit.
Lake Burunge
A seasonal soda lake on a community concession outside the park boundary, where walking safaris and night drives are permitted.
The year, month by month.
Tarangire runs opposite to the Serengeti. It is at its best when the rest of the circuit is quiet, because the dry season concentrates every animal on one river.
Odds, not promises.
Based on a two-night dry-season stay working the northern river loop and the Silale road.
Camps and lodges.
Tarangire Treetops
Oliver's Camp
Tarangire Safari Lodge
Maramboi Tented Camp
Nimali Tarangire
Burunge Tented Camp
Three things we tell everyone.
One night is not enough
The Silale swamps are two hours from the gate. A single night means you never leave the northern loop.
Tsetse flies are real here
They cluster in the woodland belts. Avoid dark blue and black clothing — it attracts them.
Concessions allow night drives
The park itself closes at 6pm. Staying on a community concession outside the boundary buys you night drives and walking.
