First safari

Northern Tanzania packs the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire into one loop you can drive in a week. This guide covers when to go, how long to stay and what it really costs, so your first safari is planned around the wildlife rather than guesswork.

When to go

There is no bad month for a Tanzania safari, only different ones. The dry season (June to October) makes animals easier to find around water. The green season (November to May) brings calving, birdlife and lower prices.

MonthsWhere to beWhy
Jan – MarNdutu, southern SerengetiWildebeest calving, big cats
Jun – JulWestern corridorGrumeti River crossings
Aug – OctNorthern SerengetiMara River crossings
Nov – DecTarangire & CraterShort rains, fewer vehicles

How long to stay

Seven nights is the sweet spot for a first trip. It gives you time to settle into the rhythm of early game drives without spending every day in the vehicle.

A classic 7-night route

  1. Arusha — arrive, rest and meet your guide
  2. Tarangire — elephants and baobabs (1 night)
  3. Central Serengeti — the big cats (3 nights)
    • Seronera and the Moru Kopjes
  4. Ngorongoro Crater — a full day on the crater floor (2 nights)
  5. Back to Arusha for your flight

What to pack

  • Neutral clothing in khaki, olive or beige. Bright colours and dark blue attract tsetse flies.
  • A warm layer for the crater rim, where mornings are cold all year.
  • Binoculars — one pair each makes a real difference.
  • A soft duffel if you are flying between parks (15 kg limit).

What it costs

A private 7-night mid-range safari starts from around US$3,200 per person, including park fees, lodges, meals and your own vehicle and guide. See the Northern Loop itinerary for a full day-by-day and live price.

“The Crater at dawn, before the other vehicles arrive, is the moment most of our guests remember.” — Janel Safaris guide team
