Health and safety

Tanzania is a welcoming country for women travelling alone. Many of our guests on safari and Kilimanjaro are solo women. A few practical steps make the trip easier and more comfortable.

Join a group departure

Joining a small-group safari or climb is the easiest way to travel solo. You share the vehicle and the cost with other travellers and have company at meals, while your guide handles logistics. Many groups also offer a room or tent share to avoid the single supplement.

What to wear

  • On safari: casual, practical clothes are fine.
  • In towns and villages: cover shoulders and knees. It reduces unwanted attention and shows respect.
  • In Zanzibar: modest dress is especially important in Stone Town. Swimwear is for the beach and pool only.

Unwanted attention

You may get comments, marriage proposals or persistent offers from touts, particularly on beaches and in markets. It is usually more annoying than threatening. A firm “hapana asante”, no thank you, and walking on usually ends it. Mentioning a husband, real or not, sometimes helps.

Getting around

  • Use transport arranged by your operator or hotel, especially after dark.
  • Avoid walking alone at night in towns or on empty beaches.
  • Sit in the back of a taxi and share your journey details with someone.

Kilimanjaro

Solo women climb Kilimanjaro all the time. You have your own tent, and you can request a female guide or assistant guide if you prefer. Read how hard Kilimanjaro is.

Accommodation

Choose well-reviewed hotels and lodges. In tented camps, staff escort guests to their tents after dark, which also keeps you safe from wildlife.

Health

Bring any personal or sanitary products you prefer, as choice outside towns is limited. Read vaccinations for Tanzania.
