Health and safety

Tanzania is a peaceful and stable country, and millions of visitors travel there safely every year. Most trips involve safari parks, the mountain and the beach, where crime is rare. The main things to manage are petty theft in towns, road travel and health.

In towns and cities

  • Petty theft such as bag snatching and pickpocketing happens in busy areas of Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam and Stone Town.
  • Keep phones out of sight on the street and carry only the cash you need.
  • Use taxis arranged by your hotel at night instead of walking.
  • Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres during the day.

On the road

Road travel is the biggest practical risk in Tanzania. Highways are busy with trucks and buses, and driving after dark is more dangerous. Our guides drive during daylight hours, keep to speed limits and use well-maintained vehicles. Wear a seatbelt whenever one is fitted.

On safari

Wild animals are dangerous only if you ignore the rules. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe, never walk alone in unfenced camps after dark, and use the escort provided. Read Tanzania national park rules and the most dangerous animals in Africa.

Health

Malaria, sun and food are the main health concerns. Read malaria in Tanzania and vaccinations for Tanzania. Drink bottled or filtered water. Make sure your insurance covers medical evacuation. Read travel insurance for Tanzania.

Border areas

Some governments advise against travel to parts of the far south near the Mozambique border. These areas are far from the usual safari and beach routes. Check your government’s travel advice before you go.

Respect local laws and customs

  • Do not photograph police, military or government buildings. Read photography rules in Tanzania.
  • Dress modestly away from the beach, especially in Zanzibar.
  • Drug laws are strict.
  • Same-sex relationships are illegal, so discretion is advised.

Our advice

Travelling with an operator who handles transfers, guides and lodges removes most of the risk. Read is Zanzibar safe and common scams in Tanzania.
