About Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, meaning “haven of peace”, is Tanzania’s largest city and its commercial centre, with several million people. Dodoma is the official capital, but Dar remains the country’s main port, airport hub and business city. It is the gateway to Zanzibar and the southern parks.

What to see

  • National Museum: history, ethnography and fossils, including casts from Olduvai Gorge.
  • Kariakoo Market: a huge, busy market for everything from spices to fabrics. Go with a guide.
  • Kivukoni Fish Market: lively early morning auctions on the waterfront.
  • Tingatinga Arts Cooperative: watch artists at work. Read about Tingatinga art.
  • The old town: German and British colonial buildings, St Joseph’s Cathedral and the Azania Front Lutheran Church.
  • Village Museum: traditional houses from across Tanzania.

Beaches

The Msasani Peninsula has cafés and a waterfront. For better beaches, go to Kigamboni across the harbour or to Bongoyo and Mbudya islands, a short boat ride away.

Getting to Zanzibar

Fast ferries take about two hours from the port to Stone Town. Flights take about 20 minutes. Read Stone Town.

Gateway to the south

Light aircraft and roads lead from Dar to Nyerere, Mikumi, Ruaha and Mafia Island. Bagamoyo is a day trip to the north.

Tips

  • Traffic can be very heavy. Allow plenty of time for the airport.
  • It is hot and humid most of the year.
  • Take normal city precautions with valuables.
