Travelling to Tanzania

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the main gateway for safaris in northern Tanzania and for Kilimanjaro climbs. It lies on the plains between Arusha and Moshi, about an hour from each.

Getting there

Several international airlines fly to JRO, with connections through hubs such as Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Addis Ababa and Nairobi. Domestic flights connect JRO with Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and some safari airstrips.

On arrival

  1. Show your yellow fever certificate if required. Read vaccinations for Tanzania.
  2. Go through immigration with your passport and visa. Read the Tanzania tourist visa.
  3. Collect your luggage. Officials may check bags for plastic carrier bags, which are banned.
  4. Meet your driver in the arrivals hall, usually holding a sign with your name.

Arusha Airport

Do not confuse JRO with Arusha Airport (ARK), a small airport on the edge of Arusha used by light aircraft to the safari parks and Zanzibar. Read about domestic flights in Tanzania.

Money and phones

  • There are ATMs and a bureau de change in arrivals.
  • Mobile network shops sell local SIM cards. You need your passport to register one.

Tips for your first night

  • Many international flights arrive late in the evening. Plan a night in Arusha or Moshi before your safari or climb.
  • Keep a warm layer in your hand luggage. Evenings in Arusha can be cool.
  • On a clear day, look for Kilimanjaro from the plane or the car park.
