Saadani National Park is where Tanzania’s savannah meets the Indian Ocean. It covers about 1,100 km² on the coast north of Dar es Salaam, opposite Zanzibar. You can go on a game drive in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon.
What to see
- Wildlife: giraffes, buffalo, elephants, warthogs, waterbuck, hartebeest and several antelope species. Lions and leopards are present but harder to see than in the big parks.
- The Wami River: boat trips pass hippos, crocodiles and mangroves, with kingfishers, fish eagles and herons.
- Beaches: green turtles nest on parts of the coastline.
- Saadani village: an old Swahili trading settlement.
What to expect
Saadani is quieter and less dense with game than the northern parks. Visit for the combination of bush, river and beach, not for big numbers of animals. Lodges are small and relaxed.
When to go
June to October and January to February are driest. Heavy rain in April and May can close roads, and some lodges close then.
